L. A. BROWN
labphoto.com / Facebook / Instagram

L.A.Brown’s photographic images captures a sweetness that will sooth your mind and stay in your heart for a long time. She is known for the ability to see life from an authentic and not digitally enhanced perspective. In fact by capturing life in a truly painterly way; people often mistake her photographic views for paintings. As an island artist since her teens, she has a myriad of images to choose from and yet, she likes to only print a limited number of each shot. If you are lucky enough to purchase an L.A.Brown, you can be sure you will be one of a few who has that special image. The way she frames each piece finishes it to the point of perfection. A Vineyard Artisan for many years, in this moment, Lisa’s work can only be found in Edgartown at Juniper, behind the courthouse and at The Old Sculpin Gallery, by the Chappy Ferry.

ALISON SHAW GALLERY
88 Dukes County Ave., Oak Bluffs
allisonshaw.com / 508-696-7429
Gallery open weekdays from 10am-4pm, by chance or appointment (maximum 2 people, masks required). Weekends by appointment.

Alison Shaw has been a photographer all of her life, and has lived on Martha’s Vineyard for most of that time. She grew up in the DC area, but she was a “summer kid” on the Vineyard, visiting her grandparents in Edgartown every summer. After graduating from Smith College in 1975, she came to the Island “just for the summer,” and never left.

Her work has evolved from documentary to abstract, and now she’s fascinated by abstracting the scenes she’d always shot in the early years, using her camera to literally paint with light. Whether it's her series of square seascapes, panoramic seascapes, shooting from the window of a moving car in New Zealand, or the teenagers in her daughter’s swim team, the movement of her camera creates gorgeous, evocative swaths of color. Another popular series of Alison’s work is the artist’s studios series – details of the studios and tools used by artists, many of whom live and work on the Cape and Islands.
