Located just 7 miles (11 km) off the southern coast of Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard combines an island getaway with the charms of small-town New England. Beautiful beaches ring the Island’s edge, while the interior is crisscrossed with biking and walking trails, accentuated by natural and cultivated foliage and flowers. Cosy lodging, casual and fine restaurants, and a vibrant cultural life fill Martha’s Vineyard’s six towns: Vineyard Haven (also known as Tisbury, the main port of call), Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Chilmark, Aquinnah, and West Tisbury

Summer is the peak season for visitors to Martha’s Vineyard. Throughout June, July, and August, pleasant temperatures average between 16°-27°C. This weather makes taking in the beautiful scenery and spending time outdoors – on land and sea – wonderfully enjoyable. Even so, the “shoulder seasons” of spring and autumn promise smaller crowds and greater tranquillity. Water temperatures stay between 17-20°C in September, drawing honeymooners and adult vacationers after children return to school.

Get to Know another (Smaller) IsleIt’s not nearly as large as the Emerald Isle, but possibilities abound for exploring the 100 square miles of Martha’s Vineyard. Though there aren’t limitations on cars, clearly-marked and in some cases separate bike routes enable visitors to get the lay of the land and experience the island more intimately on two wheels rather than four. An approximately 30-km round-trip route connects the main towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown. Stop along the way to soak up some sun or splash through the waves on one of the dozen or so public beaches.

Once you’ve traversed the land, take on the sea!
Many island businesses rent kayaks and paddleboards, and offer lessons or guided tours. Larger boats are also available for rent or charter – learn to fish or take a cruise of Vineyard or Nantucket Sound. To get a taste of historical maritime life, hop aboard a tall ship or schooner. Depending on the company, you might get to be part of the crew! Smaller sailboats are also available for private rental.

Tastes and Treats of Martha’s Vineyard
New England seafood doesn’t get much fresher than the lobsters, clams, oysters, and other varieties of fish served on Martha’s Vineyard. Sit down at one of the Vineyard’s fine restaurants for a fancy or romantic night out, or schedule a laid-back clambake to experience island flavour with the whole family. You’ll find restaurants to suit every taste and budget. Or, if you’re looking to stay in, order a pizza from one of the great pizzerias on the Island. Finally, get your morning started right with a great cup of coffee and hand-crafted pastry from one of the wonderful cafés dotting the streets of Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and Vineyard Haven.
