Biking Bliss - Tips for Bicycling on Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard truly is a cyclists paradise and most of the Island is extremely bicycle friendly. Whether you enjoy leisurely spins along the water or are looking for a physical challenge with changing terrain and inclines you’re in luck. With designated bicycle paths and bicycle tours that showcase the beauty and intrigue of the Island, two wheels may be all you need.

Biking is one of the best ways to enjoy the Vineyard, thanks to paved pathways and miles of off-road trails that crisscross the Island. From Vineyard Haven to Oak Bluffs to Edgartown, or any combination of down-Island towns, you’ll find over 44 miles of bike trails, that are mostly flat and easier for children, as well as adults. For the more experienced rider, a tour of the up-Island communities of West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah can prove quite the challenge with their hilly and curvy roadways in the more rural areas. Want to cycle the entire Island? You’ll easily log 60+ miles along the perimeter.

Getting Here and Getting Around
Bicycles are allowed on all of the incoming ferries (generally for an additional fee) and if you need a lift back to your point of origin, all of the Vineyard Transit Authority public buses allow a limited number of bicycles too.

Resources Aplenty
If you don’t own a bicycle, but still want to experience Martha’s Vineyard on two wheels, several bicycle rental shops are available to serve you. There are also bicycle repair shops available on Island to meet all your two-wheeled needs should you need a tune up before hitting the road. Click here to visit our map of bike trails to help you determine what’s the right route for you.

Rules of the Road
Bicycles shall ride WITH traffic, to the right, and single file. DO NOT ride against traffic!
  • Bicyclists shall signal when turning or stopping.
  • Bicyclists 16 and under MUST wear a helmet.
  • Riding on sidewalks is permissible, except in downtown areas where posted.
Cyclists ALWAYS have the right to ride in the road if a path isn’t available
