One thing is true no matter where you go, delicious, locally sourced foods are one of the delightful pleasures of life! The Martha's Vineyard's landscape is graced by many small farms, offering produce, oysters, poultry, cheeses, breads, fiber and so much more. As spring comes into bloom, our local farmers are sharing their wares in safe and innovative ways, keeping our Island fed.
Today, and every day, love to support our farmers, and hope that you'll be so inspired by their offerings below that once we get the "all clear," you'll visit Martha's Vineyard, take the time visit a farm stand and treat yourself to a sample, or two, from our local farms.
Morning Glory Farm
“Morning Glory Farm, started in 1975 by James and Deborah Athearn, grows about 65 acres of vegetables and small fruits on the island of Martha’s Vineyard.”
Items offered: Eggs, kale, pea shoots, pesto and potatoes are available on the honor system from the fridge by their farm stand exit.
The Grey Barn
“Bergamo, Italy, October 22, 2019 - The Grey Barn of Chilmark, MA announced today that is has won a silver medal in the category of soft cheese at the 32nd Annual World Cheese Awards in Bergamo, Italy for its certified organic, washed rind cheese, Prufrock.”
Items offered: fresh baked bread, cheeses, eggs, beef, veal, pork, lamb, raw milk, vegetables, fruit, and flowers, plus extras like Chilmark Coffee, small batch jams, and chocolate. 8am - 5pm every day.
Mermaid Farm and Dairy
“We are a small dairy farm started in 2005. We have grown from four cows to 29 and we have 60 sheep. We were started by Allen Healy and Caitlin Jones. They have two children who love to farm as well. The cows are loved like family members.”
Items offered: cheese, yogurt, local meats; self-service farm stand
Ghost Island Farm
“After over two decades of experience running a large farming operation and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), Rusty has designed a new program combining a traditional CSA with a co-op. As with a CSA program, members will pay up-front for the upcoming season. This way the farm has funds early in the season to cover operating costs and we are able to buy all of our seeds, potting soil, and fertilizers for the year.”
Items offered: local vegetables, Cinnamon Starship bread, Nip & Tuck meat, Mermaid Farm yogurt, Pam’s Pesto, Island Kimchi, Kulture Club Kombucha; Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm
The FARM Institute
“Once cultivated by Native Americans and European settlers, the 162-acre Katama Farm nearly turned into a 700-lot subdivision in the 1970s before forward-thinking locals stepped in. In 2005, The FARM Institute, an island nonprofit devoted to connecting children to agriculture, made it their headquarters and restored the buildings and grounds.” Items offered: local meat (pastured pork and locally raised beef) and eggs; call to order 508-627-7007; pick up on porch, daily.
