Harmful Household Materials & Recycling Tips

Hazardous household waste results when chemicals no longer useful as household products are improperly used, stored, or disposed of. These can include paints and solvents, oven cleaners, floor waxes, bleach, drain cleaners, and mothballs, to name just a few. Actual health implications depend on dose, length of exposure, and route of entry into the body as well as the long-term effects of impaired air and water quality and soil contamination. To reduce such risks, always read labels and follow directions carefully, buy in small quantities to avoid storage and waste problems, and substitute non-hazardous products whenever possible. To dispose of these substances safely, bring hazardous household chemicals to the harmful household materials collection station at the Edgartown Wastewater Plant on the dates published in May, June and August each year.

Recycling Tips

  • Recycle when it is convenient (doing dishes, taking out the garbage).
  • Separate and store recyclables in a clean dry area.
  • Set up a small recycling center in your home by arranging recycling containers (available at landfills) or label bags/boxes in a closet, under the sink, in the attic, basement, or garage.

Become an Environmental Shopper

  • Buy products in bulk or economy sizes to reduce heavy packaging.
  • Look for products that are recyclable and also packaged in recyclable material.
  • Reuse shopping bags and buy beverages in returnable deposit bottles.
  • Avoid purchasing plastic disposable merchandise such as pens, lighters, razors, diapers, even cameras. Choose durable and reusable alternatives.
  • Make use of thrift shops and the West Tisbury landfill building for the exchange of used clothes, furniture, appliances, books, etc.
  • Many Island businesses will accept certain waste items for reuse or exchange.
